TEHACHAPI DEPOT RAILROAD MUSEUM SHOWCASES THE IMPORTANCE OF THE RAILROAD TO TEHACHAPI'S PAST As one of the most popular visitors' attractions in the area, the Tehachapi Depot welcomes thousands of visitors yearly from all over the country and the world. The Museum houses numerous historic railroad artifacts in a building that replicates the original depot. The old depot was constructed in 1904 to replace a still earlier depot that was destroyed by fire. It was one of several depots built by Southern Pacific as "Style 23" It was vital to the commerce in the area as well as facilitating the safe and eficient operation of rail traffic in the Tehachapi Pass. In 1971, however, all scheduled passenger service in the Tehachapis was terminated, and the depot fell into disuse, used only as a facility for railroad maintenance personnel. In the early 2000s planning began to restore the old depot to new life as a museum: the city acquired ownership of the depot, the "Friends of the Tehachapi Depot" was formed, and in 2006 renovation work began on the building. On June 13, 2008, with restoration work complete, the building was destroyed by fire. But out of the tragedy, came the conviction to rebuild. Using old blueprints for this type of station, the depot was reconstructed, and on June 5, 2010 it opened as a museum. The Depot is open Wednesdays to Mondays, from 11:00 to 4:00. Our 10th Anniversary is coming in June 2020! We are planning numerous events that showcase our museum so plan to be a part of this milestone happening.. 101 W.
